Prepare for some very short tempers, as we bring you the five biggest confrontations at the poker table, from World Series of Poker level beef to out-and-out fight night vibes at the cash tables. From tournament tirades to all-in aggression that goes way too far, we’ve found five of the best showdowns you’ll ever see, featuring Matt Berkey, Mike ‘the Mouth’ Matusow, Phil ‘the Poker Brat’ Hellmuth and Will Kassouf.

1. Beef on Ballys as Threats Go Large

It’s fair to say that while streams such as Hustler XCasino Live have attracted a lot of attention, others have fallen behind in terms of viewerships. There are some amazing cash game streams out there, however, featuring shocking plays, and even more shocking players. Two players were prepared to go the distance by way of verbal insults on the Ballys Big Bet Poker Live Stream when a stand-off ended in the worst thing you can say from one human being to another without the cops getting called.

Ryan Depaulo breaks down one of the most insane poker call-outs of all-time, as Jason a.k.a. ‘Honey Badger’ decides not to be too sweet. It’s one of the funniest poker videos ever and Austin and Jason go head-to-head.

“A dude who’s wearing gold pyjamas just told me that he’ll make my existence vanish,” as Depaulo says. “I better backpedal.”

2. Matt Berkey and Nik Airball Cosy Up

If there’s one thing more entertaining than Matt Berkey and Nik Airball going nose to nose for a potential fist-fight, it’s Doug Polk commentating on Matt Berkey and Nik Airball going nose to nose for a potential fist-fight. Just a year ago, the Solve For Why founder Matt Berkey and some allege trust fund baby Nik Airball went at it in the idle of a cash game.

Airball came in firing, but Berkey was having none of it and squared up to the cash game whale. Airball and Berkey were face to face and Berkey offered the latter outside whereupon he would ‘beat your ass’.

Whenever the dealer says “come on guys, friendly game”, you know that it’s going to be counter-productive. As Polk says, this is something of a UFC weigh-in stand-off.

It’s an astonishing confrontation between the two, and Berkey eventually got the better of Nik Airball at the PokerGO cash felt.

3. Eric Persson Pokes the Poker Brat

“I’m gonna raise you with a full house and you’re going to be all-in with a pair.”

Back in 2022, the PokerGO Tour played host to one of the tensest heads-up showdowns of all-time… and it wasn’t even to decide who won a bracelet. Phil Hellmuth drew Eric Persson in the first round and the two men went at each other. Largely, The Poker Brat kept his cards – and his insults – close to his chest, but the same could not be said for ‘The Maverick’.

Throwing barbs at Hellmuth, Persson even ‘flipped the bird’ at the Poker Brat, and Hellmuth snapped.

“I’m gonna raise you with a full house and you’re going to be all-in with a pair,” Hellmuth jibed. “It’s embarrassing, but you’re an amateur.”

Persson actually got the better of his illustrious opponent, but Hellmuth took the L, came back and apologized for his own conduct, prompting Persson to man up too.

Since that day, The Poker Brat has continued his success, while ‘Maverick’ has virtually disappeared from the high stakes live poker scene. Here’s how it all went down:

4. Mike Mouths Off ‘The Sheik’

Shahram ‘Shawn’ Sheikhan caused quite a stir in 2005 when he took on a player who needs no provocation. To say that Sheikhan rubbed Mike ‘The Mouth’ Matusow up the wrong way would be an understatement. The two men weren’t getting on well before the flashpoint of a big hand where Matusow was involved in a big pot. Sheikhan folded pre-flop, then with just Matusow and one other opponent involved, Sheikhan slammed his hand on the poker table when the flop was dealt, clearly indicating that he had a piece of the flop.

Matusow exploded, telling his fellow American to close his mouth in less than friendly language. Sheikhan and Matusow were both banned from the table for 10 minutes by Jack Effel before resuming hostilities. The pair clashed time and time again as only one man could survive. Eventually, Matusow hit the nut flush and called Sheikhan’s bluff shove, crowing ‘I’ve got the nuts!’ with all the class of a reversing dump truck. Sheikhan busted in 11th place for $600,000 but while Matusow survived the battle, couldn’t win the war and busted just two places higher for $1 million.

“Sheikhan actually played pretty darn well,” said Norman Chad on commentary. “I don’t know how many friends he made.”

You be the judge on Chad’s words right here:

5. Will Kassouf vs. Griffin Benger

Our final fight at the felt was purely verbal… but maybe the worst of them all. We’ve done a deep dive into the epic 2016 clash between Griffin Benger and Will Kassouf but for pure silliness, it has to count as one of the most entertaining fights of all time. It’s got all the classic hallmarks of a poker punch-up other than a ring and a boxing referee. The Main Event? Tick. Deep run? Double tick. Aces vs. Kings? You got it.

When Kassouf is considering shoving with pocket kings, at the last moment he looks like he’s slightly considering the fold. Benger leaps on the moment, antagonising his opponent into the call.

“What you’re doing to me is verbal abuse. You’re a bully. It’s not called speech play, it’s called being a bad person. [Effel] is not your Dad; he’s not going to help you.

Kassouf eventually walks into the trap and is eliminated by Benger as a result. In the end, as dramatic as the fight was, you end up feeling sorry for both players who were butting heads.

Conclusion

Poker is a game that often brings out the best in strategy and the worst in emotions. From verbal spars to physical standoffs, these five confrontations remind us that while the game is built on skill and composure, the heat of competition can push even the coolest players to their limits. Whether it’s the sharp wit of a Hellmuth one-liner, the simmering tension of a Berkey-Airball showdown, or the unforgettable theatrics of Kassouf and Benger, these moments highlight the raw humanity behind the cards. In the end, poker isn’t just about the chips—it’s about the personalities, the clashes, and the unforgettable stories that make the game so electrifying.
