Daniel Negreanu’s record in live poker tournaments is arguably the envy of every single player on the planet. Is ‘Kid Poker’ the biggest player on the poker-playing planet, what is his poker reputation, and how might that change in the forthcoming years? We take a look back at Daniel Negreanu’s first 50 years and what might be around the corner.

Kid Poker Turns 50 – Is He the Best Ever?

As Daniel Negreanu has turned a half-century old – celebrated by him and many poker friends this week – the question is worth asking about just how high up the list of all-time greats ‘DNegs’ sits. While the Canadian is behind Bryn Kenney, Justin Bonomo, Stephen Chidwick, Jason Koon, Mikita Badziakouski and Dan Smith on the official The Hendon Mob All-Time Money List page, his lifetime image rights and sponsorship packages over the course of two decades at the top of the game likely far outweigh anyone else’s overall financial total.

Add to that the sheer clout of Negreanu’s words in the industry, his Poker Hall  of Famer status and the likelihood with which he is able to stay at the top now he is a Global Ambassador for GGPoker and Negreanu is top of the charts in many people’s eyes. Cashing for over $53 million in live tournaments alone, Negreanu could easily head to Macau and make millions as the cash tables. The fact he chooses not to speaks volumes about the area in which he is the biggest success – his personal life away from the felt.

Negreanu’s biggest cause for optimism as he turns 50 is clearly the life he shares with those around him. With a set of friends, loving familial links and a life spent with the self-confessed girl of his dreams, his doting wife Amanda, Negreanu’s biggest win over the course of his 25 years is in building the life he loves.

One of Negreanu’s most famous hands is this losing hand on High Stakes Poker where even in defeat, ‘DNegs’ was the star, marking him as ‘must-watch’ on TV.

A Life in Poker

Over the course of two decades in the game, Daniel Negreanu has become synonymous with the game of poker. He has been the biggest face of the game, signing as a PokerStars Team Pro and after leaving ‘Stars, made the switch to GGPoker, helping them grow into perhaps the most influential poker brand in the game today. Negreanu’s track record in tournament poker has been incredible, with his victory in the 2024 Poker Players Championship sealing his seventh WSOP bracelet win, ending a drought lasting over a decade. In truth, however, there was no drought in other arenas.

Winning a Super High Roller Bowl title for over $3.3 million, crushing in games such as High Stakes Poker and Poker After Dark, Negreanu has been the one constant on our TV screens during a period where Black Friday took Full Tilt Poker out of play, isolated the American online poker player market and shook up poker both in Europe and the rest of the world.

During every period of change, there has been Negreanu.  Whether it was as the face of ‘Stars, as an advocate for poker change both on and off the felt or in recent years delving into solvers, GTO poker and new methods of playing, Kid Poker has always been like a kid in the candy shop.

Negreanu might have lost big to Doug Polk online, but got his own back in an episode of High Stakes Duel on PokerGO.

The Senior Star?

After winning the seventh WSOP title of his career this summer, Negreanu may decide to mix it up in 2025, having achieved so much more than virtually all of his peers when you consider all areas of the mindsport. Kid Poker is – ironically – now old enough to compete in the WSOP Seniors Event next summer in Las Vegas.

A quarter of a century after winning his first ranking poker tournament, Kid Poker is a huge influence on the game today. Just look at his X/Twitter account and how far that reaches, both in terms of appealing to recreational newcomers and speaking for the elite or mid-elite poker professionals. Negreanu is a de facto spokesperson, far happier to speak out on poker issues than players such as Tom Dwan, Chris Moneymaker or Phil Ivey.

Winning his first WSOP bracelet in 1998 and his most recent 26 years later in 2024, Negreanu has reached an impressive dozen final tables in the first half of 2024 and will be integral to the success of WSOP Paradise in partnership with GGPoker in December. Kid Poker isn’t just a fixture on the poker calendar at many events. He forms part of the landscape in the game. We can’t wait to see what the next 50 years bring for Kid Poker.

Happy birthday, Daniel Negreanu!
