Tight is right, as the British poker crusher Toby Lewis once told me. Tight poker is solid in style, bulletproof in terms of strategy, and aggressive in the right moments.
I fell in love with poker the way many people did in the United Kingdom – by watching Late Night Poker on Channel 4. My favorite experience was winning (shock!) the 888poker SuperStack in Birmingham. After half an hour, I was down to 10 big blinds. Two days later, I had all the chips. It made me fall in love with tournaments as opposed to cash games.
British poker pro and Hendon Mobster Barny Boatman is a total hero of mine. I have gotten to know Barny over the years, and he was the biggest influence behind me pushing the other members of The Hendon Mob to create the article series I write that was nominated for a Global Poker Award. I’ll never forget his kindness and advice; he’s a legend. When Barny won his first WSOP bracelet and walked back into the Hippodrome in Leicester Square after coming home to London, there was a standing ovation in the cardroom. That tells you how much he’s loved!
My front room! I’m primarily a homebody, although the Media Event at EPT Dublin in 2012 is right up there. I had the better of Jake Cody to win a games console but was outdrawn by a local – 15 minutes of fame gone right there!
Live is all about concentration. Playing your A-Game in every hand is impossible, but never miss looking at opponents’ cards at showdown and adjust accordingly. Online is a numbers game in more ways than one; put in the volume, focus on self-improvement, and the results will come; just stick to tight bankroll management.
They are mostly to do with writing about the game rather than playing it these days. Completing my first novel about a poker-playing detective is top of my list. That said, it would be amazing to play the $10,000-entry WSOP Main Event one day… a guy can dream!
I’ve been in the poker industry since Black Friday and in that time, the game has changed more than during any other period in history. I’ve been lucky enough to speak with players across a variety of continents and poker eras, all of whom have a very unique experience when it comes to poker.
I’m a huge believer in the power of social media being harnessed correctly. ‘Poker Twitter’ is almost a multiverse in itself, so I keep my finger to the pulse. I’m lucky to have accrued quite the virtual Rolodex too! So if anything breaks, I normally have a strong source in poker to reach out to who will have an even stronger opinion!
Technology is changing poker every day. The advent of solvers such as PIO have revolutionised how the top players approach the online game, with GTO theory now more important than ever. Live poker has made fewer noticeable changes in recent years, but surviving the pandemic and returning with stronger attendances than ever points to consistent growth, which is possibly even more important than the initial changes that grew live poker so much pre-Black Friday. This year could well see a record attendance in the WSOP Main Event as well as poker operators online breaking records too. Poker has probably never been resilient.
Missed your message in the middle of that one buddy. Thank you for saying that, been a tough 24 hours and he’s not out of the woods. It’s the waiting around for news of when and whether they’ll operate which we’re finding the hardest, but here’s hoping it all ends fine and he’s back home fixing up soon.
